Zombie Apocalypse in the American Colonies: Project-Based Survival Challenge (Self-Paced Course)

This project-based course drops learners into a Colonial-era zombie apocalypse! Through 4 hands-on tasks, they study life in early America & apply their discoveries to create the ultimate final project: a custom-built zombie-proof shelter.

Lesson 1: Intro to the Project & Understanding Colonial Life for Survival

In our first session, learners step into the world of early American colonists to discover what life was really like—because surviving a zombie apocalypse in the 1600s or 1700s means understanding the people and the world around them! Students will explore daily colonial life, major jobs and industries, the climate and geography of different regions, and how political and social structures shaped communities. By the end of class, learners will identify which real colonial skills each region had.

Lesson 2: Designing Your Colonial Zombie-Proof Shelter

In this class, students begin their big project—the zombie-proof shelter! We explore what building supplies were plentiful in each colonial region and which tradespeople (carpenters, blacksmiths, farmers, masons) had the skills needed to build a strong hideout. Learners think through storage needs and fortifications, then watch a short video on modern zombie survival shelters to spark ideas they can adapt to the Colonial era. By the end, they’ll have a solid plan for their shelter design.

Lesson 3: Designing Your Colonial Zombie-Proof Shelter

In this class, students pinpoint exactly where they want to survive in the 13 Colonies. Learners create a simple map, labeling each colony and its region, then explore key survival factors like access to water, food sources, trade routes, and natural resources. We do a quick overview of each colony to compare strengths and challenges. Students finish by marking an X on their map to claim the spot where they’ll build their zombie-proof shelter.

Lesson 4: Designing Your Colonial Zombie-Proof Shelter

In our finale, students prepare for the moment the zombies arrive! We watch a short video about modern “bug-out” survival bags, then each learner chooses 10 items they can realistically carry in a small bag or on their body—using only objects that could exist in Colonial America. Students also get time to finalize and share their completed zombie-proof shelters, showing how all their research and planning came together.
